All babies come in different shapes and sizes. You may find that one brand of cloth nappy may fit your bub better than others. Some babies are also more heavy-wetting than others. To help you troubleshoot nappy leaks, here is a short guide on why they may be leaking and some recommendations on how to fix it.
Hold on, have you prepped your nappy inserts?
If your inserts are new, make sure to wash them before use. Like fresh towels, washing them fluffs up the fibres and makes them more absorbent. Microfibre inserts need to be only washed once. Hemp and bamboo, which have natural oils, need to be prepped. Soak them overnight if short of time. They will reach their full absorbency after a few washes. Change nappies more frequently during this time.
Getting the fit right
Make sure that the fit is snug without any gaps. The nappy should be sitting on the underwear line. If there is any gap in the legs, you will get leaks. Same with the waist and the back of the nappy - adjust the rise setting accordingly. A lot of leaks occur due to the nappy not being tight enough. If you have a boy, make sure that his private part is pointing downwards.
Also make sure that all fabric material/ inserts are tucked in to avoid wicking.
Making sure you have enough absorbency
The fabrics of your inserts have different levels of absorption. Microfibre, absorbs very fast but can become saturated and cause leaks when they are compressed. By 3-6 months, you definitely need more than one insert.
If you have Alva Baby or Mama Koala microfibre inserts, try pairing them with either bamboo or hemp which has a greater capacity to hold liquids. As hemp and bamboo are slower absorbing fabrics, you place these underneath your microfibre insert. You can purchase additional inserts here.
Leaks at night - depending on your baby's age, day nappies like Alva Baby / Mama Koala will not have enough absorbency to last through the whole night. Try adding a third booster for light to moderate wetters. There are also dedicated night nappies which have layers upon layers of absorbency. These are much bulky but the absorbent layers are necessary to keep the nappy from leaking.
Waterproofing - Looking after your shells & covers
Drying them on high heat and even excessive exposure from the hot sun can delaminate/ damage the waterproof layer of your nappies. Make sure to follow the recommendation from the nappy's manufacturer. Shells and covers dry quicker than inserts so you can just line dry them in the shade.
Detergent Buildup
Too much detergent in your wash and using fabric conditioners may reduce the absorbency of your nappies. The fabric becomes repellant and less water or urine is absorbed causing your nappies to leak. Wash your nappies on a hot cycle with detergent followed by additional rinses.
Still getting leaks or struggling with the fit? You can always try an alternative brand or a different style of nappy, as babies fit each nappy differently. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Daisy and Belles V2 Trial Bundle- Dainty Floral Pack
Regular price $54.95 Save $-54.95Enjoy great savings on this amazing value bundle of our Daisy and Belles V2 nappies.
Our Daisy & Belles nappies are one-sized pocket nappies that are suitable from infancy all the way to potty training. Simply adjust the snaps to get the correct fit. Inserts (absorbent part) are stuffed inside the pocket of the nappy shell.
What's the difference from our first release? Our V2 nappies are lined with athletic wicking jersey, an amazing fabric which wicks away moisture from your baby's bum. The pocket shell is also slightly smaller than our V1 release, overall giving a fantastic and more comfortable fit.
Features:
Suitable from 4.5kg-18kg
Lined with ATHLETIC WICKING JERSEY (see our V1 nappies if your prefer fleece lining)
Inner double gussets - additional barrier against side leaks
Belly band - strip of PUL to avoid front wicking or leaking
Why do we recommend two inserts?
Around 3-6 months time when babies tend to wee more, one insert is not enough. When bub is saturating the first insert, it's time to add another to boost absorbency. If you are purchasing the hemp and bamboo mix bundle, place the hemp insert underneath the bamboo mix insert. Hemp is a slower absorber but can hold more moisture. You can also purchase additional inserts here.
Can I use these nappies from birth?
In reality our one-sized nappies may be too big to get a snug fit on a teeny tiny newborn. These will fit more nicely a few weeks after birth. You may prefer our Daisy and Belles newborn nappies for a smaller option.
How do I prep the nappies?
Soak the inserts overnight. Wash with detergent prior to use.
How to wash the nappies?
1. Remove soiling
2. Prewash- warm cycle, 40° Celsius (do not exceed 60°), 30-60 min
3. Main wash- warm cycle, 40° Celsius (do not exceed 60°), 1-2 hrs
4. Line dry shells in shade (DO NOT TUMBLE DRY), inserts can be machine or line dried

Daisy and Belles Hemp Cotton Insert
Regular price $6.95 Save $-6.95Our hemp cotton insert is great for adding absorbency to your cloth nappies. Hemp is a highly sustainable, durable and extremely absorbent natural fabric. Simply stuff inside your pocket nappy or lay on top of your nappy covers. Hemp is safe to place directly against baby's skin.
* 4 layers of hemp and cotton fleece - 330gsm
* Dimensions: 34 cm length x 13 cm width (hemp like other natural fibres will slightly shrink on washing)
Hemp inserts need to be prepped to get rid of natural oils, fluff up the fibres and increase the absorbency. Run a full cycle wash with a small amount of detergent. Repeat process, without detergent for 4-5 washes (no need to dry in between). If short of time, soak inserts overnight. Your inserts will reach their full absorbency after about 8-10 washes.
Drying: Line dry or tumble dry low heat setting. Very hot temperatures can cause your hemp inserts to overly shrink. Improper care will void the warranty of your inserts.
